Part-Time Correctional Officer Program

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice established a part-time Correctional Officer program in December 1998. Part-time applicants must attend the six-week Pre-Service Training Academy on a full-time basis. After the completion, a part-time officer works approximately 20 hours per week with workdays and hours at the discretion of the unit warden.

Part-time officers may temporarily move to full-time employment once per year. This permits those who are working part-time while in college to work full-time during the summer break. Also, part-time employees have the option to permanently change to a full-time position. With excellent pay, benefits and flexible work schedule, this part-time program is beneficial for many applicants looking to begin a Career with a Purpose!
