Insurance
TDCJ employees receive high‑quality health coverage through the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS), including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, and flexible spending account options. Employees receive state-paid health premiums, with additional coverage available for dependents.
Retirement
As an employee of the State of Texas, TDCJ employees contribute to the Employee Retirement System (ERS) Trust Fund. The defined benefit plan (also known as a pension), provides eligible retirees with a monthly payment (or annuity) based on their salary, service credit and retirement date for the rest of their life.
Holidays and Leave
TDCJ offers paid vacation, sick leave, and holiday time, along with military leave, emergency leave, bereavement leave and other leave programs that support work–life balance. Full-time employees accrue 8 hours of vacation per month, with the hour increasing as your state service increases. Additionally, full-time employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month.
