The mission of Recruiting & Hiring is to ensure and promote fairness and consistency in the recruitment, selection and retention of qualified applicants and provide service and guidance to upper management, employees and applicants.

Correctional Officer (CO) Staffing consists of three functional areas:

CO Hiring

The core function of CO Hiring is to attract, process, and hire exceptional CO candidates for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Our team is guided by the agency’s Core Values as we mentor our candidates throughout the entire process, by coaching, inspiring, and fostering enthusiasm. This includes providing innovative talent sourcing, processing, and hiring services by employing a streamlined hiring processes to include:

  • Advertising and marketing aimed at attracting the best quality applicants
  • Hosting hiring events to process same-day Correctional Officer hires
  • Processing applications through rigorous screening methods, stringent background checks, and conducting fact-to-face virtual interviews and scheduling sessions.

CO Transfers

The core function of CO Transfers section is to facilitate the movement of correctional officers around the state to meet the needs of the CO and the agency. The CO Transfer section administers three distinct transfer methods:

  • Regular unit transfers
  • Emergency transfers
  • Administrative reassignment transfers

These methods ensure that we can effectively address the staffing requirements and maintain operational efficiency across all units.

Quality Control

The core function of Quality Control is to stringently screen each CO application to ensure it adheres to the strict guidelines set forth by the agency to ensure TDCJ is only hiring the highest quality applicants for our CO positions. The Quality Control process includes:

  • Conducting a comprehensive inspection of each applicant to ensure its completeness and accuracy.
  • Meticulously scrutinizing the applicant’s criminal background to ensure they meet TDCJ’s highest standards.
  • Identifying the applicant’s unit and salary by applying all applicable prior experience, ensuring the applicant begins at the highest possible salary and that the unit choice is beneficial to both the applicant and the agency.
