June 17, 2025
Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) inmate Jabari Lewis pleaded guilty on June 13, 2025, to the capital murder of TDCJ Correctional Officer Jovian Motley. Lewis was sentenced to life without parole as a result of the plea.
Motley, who joined the agency in October 2022, was 27 years old when he died in the line of duty at the Wainwright Unit in Lovelady, Texas on November 13, 2023. He was assisting other officers in restraining Lewis when he died.
“I am grateful to the law enforcement agencies and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to hold Lewis accountable and seek justice for the Motley family,” TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier said. “Officer Motley was a hero, who gave his life serving our state. His courage and dedication will always be remembered. Our thoughts are forever with the family and friends of Officer Motley as they mourn the loss of such an extraordinary person.”
The case was prosecuted by the Special Prosecution Unit (SPU).
“This plea brings this tragic case to a conclusion and holds Lewis fully accountable for his actions. Through our investigation and case preparation, we learned that Officer Motley was an exemplary correctional officer who was deeply committed to his duties, highly respected by his colleagues, and cherished by his family. Working alongside the Motley family to secure justice while honoring Jovian's life and dedicated service has been a profound privilege for our office,” Jack Choate, Executive Director of the SPU said. “This resolution spares all parties the burden of a lengthy and difficult trial process. Importantly, by entering this plea, Lewis has waived his right to appeal, bringing complete closure to this matter. I would like to thank the SPU team members who worked hard to prepare this case for trial, particularly Special Prosecutor Rachel Jordan, Investigator Brian Chason, and Investigator Jay Brionez. I would also like to thank the Office of the Inspector General for their thorough investigation and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice who never hesitated in assisting us with matters necessary for the successful prosecution of this case. Finally, and most importantly, our thoughts remain with the Motley family as they continue to heal from this tremendous loss. They are an amazing family, and I know will always keep the legacy of Jovian Motley alive in the hearts of everyone."
Lewis was serving a 20-year sentence for burglary of a habitat, a 10-year sentence for manufacturing and possession of a controlled substance, and two five-year sentences for aggravated robbery out of Dallas County.
