The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has named Senior Warden Anthony Newton of the W. J. "Jim" Estelle Unit the 2025 Warden of the Year, recognizing his exceptional leadership and dedication to correctional excellence.

Each year, TDCJ regional directors nominate wardens who demonstrate outstanding leadership, mentorship, vision, and statistical performance. These nominations undergo a rigorous review process by the Correctional Institutions Division (CID) deputy division directors and the CID director for final approval.

Michael Britt, Region I Director, highlighted Newton's unwavering dedication and forward-thinking leadership as key factors in his selection.

"He consistently goes above and beyond to support his staff, improve operations, and create a safer, more effective environment, earning the respect of both his team and the broader corrections community," Britt said.

Executive Director Bobby Lumpkin added, “Warden Newton is innovative and leads with purpose. His willingness to take on new initiatives and his dedication to progress have earned him the well-earned title of Warden of the Year. This dedication is visible not only in his administrative achievements but also in his commitment to rehabilitation and staff welfare. He has championed the integration of inmate artwork throughout his facilities, recognizing the therapeutic power of art for inmates and for staff. He’s also a true innovator in corrections management, revolutionizing CO staffing with the implementation of the Estelle team-based staffing model, which has improved operational efficiency and officer morale.”

Newton began his TDCJ career in January 2002 as a correctional officer at the Alfred D. Hughes Unit in Gatesville, Texas. He advanced through the ranks, serving as sergeant in 2004, lieutenant in 2005, captain in 2015, and major of correctional officers in 2018, where he oversaw the unit’s Mental Health Therapeutic Diversion Program. In 2019, he was promoted to assistant warden at the Mark W. Stiles Unit in Beaumont, Texas, and later transferred to the Wayne Scott Psychiatric Facility in 2021. Newton became senior warden at the W.F. Ramsey Unit in January 2022, transferred to the O.B. Ellis Unit in May 2023, and assumed his current role at the W. J. Estelle Unit in August 2024.

A Nationally-Certified Psychiatric Technician since 2004, Newton holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Ashworth College. He also possesses a black belt in Tae Kwon Do with more than 35 years of martial arts experience.

As senior warden, Newton is responsible for the unit's overall operations and culture.

"I am truly grateful to God for this recognition, and I credit my amazing staff at the Estelle Unit for their outstanding work and the support they have shown me toward my vision for excellence and culture change," Newton said.
