To conduct external research about TDCJ or its populations, individuals must submit a completed proposal packet one month prior to the planned quarterly review of proposals.

Individuals should submit completed applications and documents to:

Application Documents

The research applicant must submit the following documents to the Research and Development Department:

• An Application to Conduct External Research (ERF 22.01) (PDF) with the following attachments for each principal investigator and co-principal investigator(s).
• IRB Approval Letter
• A legible copy of REAL ID-compliant driver license, passport, or government-issued identification card,
• Data Management Plan (ERF 22.02) (PDF)
• Structured Executive Summary of Research (ERF 22.03) (PDF)
• Full Research Proposal
• IRB Approval Letter

If requesting administrative data:

• Data Request Form (ERF 22.04a) and Data Request Form – Addendum (ERF 22.04b) (PDF), if applicable.

If conducting primary data collection:

• Informed Consent Form (written at a 6th grade reading level)
• Research instruments to be used such as surveys, interview guides, observational protocols, etc.
