TDCJ Pays Tribute to Warden Jack Pursley

The bond correctional staff share is lifelong, no matter the time, no matter the rank. Former Huntsville Unit Senior Warden Jack Pursley served in that role at the historic Huntsville “Walls” Unit for 15 years, longer than anyone in the long history of TDCJ.

Now, current staff honor him on his final ride.

Warden Pursley, a lifelong Huntsville resident and Sam Houston State University alumni, passed away last week at the age of 84. He began his career with TDCJ in 1963 as a correctional officer at the Ferguson Unit. Over the next 30 years, Warden Pursley rose through the security ranks to become the Senior Warden at the Huntsville Unit where he later retired in 1993.

“The staff here remember him as a very humble man, a very unique warden,” says current Huntsville Unit Senior Warden Dennis Crowley. “He was one of the best. To try and fill his shoes nowadays – that’s a tough thing to do.”

Warden Jack Pursley’s impact on his community, fellow officers, and employees will always be an example.

Thank you for your service and dedication to the TDCJ mission; rest easy sir.
